When Everything Feels Like Too Much

Overwhelm can feel like your mind is racing while your body shuts down—or like everything is demanding your attention at once.

In those moments, the goal isn’t to solve everything.

It’s to take one small step at a time.

Step 1: Pause

Stop what you’re doing—even briefly.

Give yourself permission to step out of the rush.

Step 2: Breathe

Take a slow breath in… and a longer breath out.

Do this a few times until your body begins to settle, even just slightly.

Step 3: Name What You’re Feeling

Are you anxious? Exhausted? Overstimulated?

Putting words to your experience helps create clarity.

Step 4: Narrow Your Focus

Instead of thinking about everything, ask:

“What’s one small thing I can do right now?”

Not the whole list, just one step.

Step 5: Lower the Pressure

You don’t have to do everything perfectly.

In overwhelming moments, “good enough” is more than enough.

Step 6: Reach for Support

Text someone. Step outside. Sit in silence.

Or consider talking to a counsellor, someone who can help you unpack what’s underneath the overwhelm.

You’re Not Failing—Your System Is Overloaded

Overwhelm is not a sign of weakness.

It’s a signal that something needs care, attention, and support.

And you don’t have to figure it out on your own.
