Feeling Overwhelmed? Come Back to the Present Moment
When anxiety rises or emotions feel too heavy, grounding techniques can help bring you back to the present. These tools are simple, accessible, and can be used almost anywhere, whether you’re at home, at work, or in the middle of a difficult moment.
Grounding doesn’t make your feelings disappear, but it helps you feel steadier within them.
1. The 5-4-3-2-1 Method
This technique gently anchors you in your senses:
5 things you can see
4 things you can feel
3 things you can hear
2 things you can smell
1 thing you can taste
It slows your thoughts and reconnects you to your surroundings.
2. Deep, Intentional Breathing
Try this: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4, exhale for 6.
Repeat several times.
Longer exhales signal safety to your nervous system, helping your body calm down.
3. Name What’s Happening
Silently or out loud, say:
“I’m feeling anxious right now.”
“This is a moment of stress.”
Naming your experience can reduce its intensity and create space between you and the feeling.
4. Touch Something Grounding
Hold onto something physical—a chair, a table, your clothing—and focus on its texture and temperature. Let your body feel supported.
5. Orient Yourself
Look around and gently remind yourself:
Where you are
What day it is
That you are safe right now
This is especially helpful during moments of panic or dissociation.
You Don’t Have to Do This Alone
Grounding is a starting point, not a long-term solution for everything. If overwhelming feelings are showing up often, it might be a sign your mind and body are asking for support.
There’s a chair waiting for you, a place to slow down, breathe, and begin to feel steady again.
