Grief Isn’t Linear—And That’s Okay

expectations around grief healing process

Grief doesn’t move in a straight line.

It doesn’t follow neat stages or predictable timelines.

It doesn’t ask permission before showing up.

Instead, grief comes in waves.

Sometimes gentle.

Sometimes overwhelming.

Sometimes when you least expect it.

The Myth of “Moving On”

There’s a quiet pressure in our world to “move on” from grief.

To be okay after a certain amount of time.

To return to normal.

To carry on as though nothing has changed.

But grief changes you.

And healing doesn’t mean forgetting, it means learning how to carry what you’ve lost in a different way.

Why Grief Feels So Unpredictable

You might feel:

  • Okay one day, and overwhelmed the next

  • Numb, then suddenly emotional

  • Strong in one moment, exhausted in another

This doesn’t mean you’re doing grief wrong.

It means your nervous system, your memories, and your love are all still connected to what you’ve lost.

There Is No “Right Way” to Grieve

Your grief is yours.

It may be loud or quiet.

Visible or deeply internal.

Immediate or delayed.

All of it is valid.

Making Space for Grief

Grief softens when it has space.

Not space to disappear, but space to be acknowledged.

Talking about your loss, your experience, and the impact it’s had can help ease the isolation that grief often brings.
