Attachment, Trust, and Trauma: What Caregivers Need to Know

Trust isn’t given—it’s built slowly
For children who have experienced trauma, trust is not automatic.
In fact, closeness may feel unsafe.
You might notice:
Pushing you away
Testing limits
Avoiding connection
This isn’t rejection, it’s protection.
Attachment Is Shaped by Early Experience
Children learn about relationships early:
Are people safe?
Will my needs be met?
Can I rely on others?
When those answers have been “no,” it takes time to rewrite that story.
Connection Over Correction
When behaviour is challenging, it’s tempting to focus on discipline.
But healing happens through connection.
Try:
Getting down to their level
Using a calm voice
Prioritizing relationship before rules
Consistency Builds Trust
Trust grows when:
You respond in predictable ways
You follow through
You stay, even when things are hard
It Takes Time—and That’s Okay
Attachment doesn’t form overnight.
But every moment of connection is a step toward healing.
